Tucked into the foothills of Black Mountain, the Australian National Botanical Gardens is one of Canberra’s most beautiful and relaxing attractions. We were looking for an easy family outing that included some physical exploration, fresh air, and perhaps a scenic cafe and not to be missed, a peaceful trip to the spa (after the stressful move).

Visitor Information

The Australian National Botanical Gardens is conveniently located just five minutes from Canberra’s city centre, making it one of the easiest attractions to add to your itinerary.

Opening Hours

  • Gardens: Daily from 8:30 am – 5:00 pm
  • Visitor Centre: Open daily
  • Entry: Free but with paid parking

Parking is available on-site, and there are accessible pathways throughout many areas of the gardens. Guided walks are often available and are a wonderful way to learn more about Australia’s unique flora.

Allow anywhere from 2 to 4 hours to fully explore the gardens, enjoy a meal at the café, and browse the gift shop.

What Makes the Australian National Botanical Gardens So Special?

Unlike traditional botanical gardens that showcase plants from around the world, the Australian National Botanical Gardens focuses exclusively on native Australian species. More than 4,000 different plant species are represented throughout beautifully designed themed gardens that recreate habitats from across the country.

As you wander the walking paths, you’ll travel through:

  • Rainforest gullies
  • Red Centre landscapes
  • Eucalypt forests
  • Rock gardens
  • Native grasslands
  • Banksia collections
  • Wildflower displays

The gardens change dramatically throughout the seasons, meaning every visit offers something new.

Must-See Highlights

The Rainforest Gully

One of the most magical sections of the gardens, and our families favorite, is the Rainforest Gully.

Towering tree ferns create a cool, shaded environment that feels worlds away from Canberra’s dry climate. Wooden boardwalks wind through lush greenery while the sounds of flowing water and birds singing overhead make it one of the most peaceful places in the city.

It’s also one of the most photogenic spots in the gardens. Sun beams stretching through dense fauna, it was a stunner right from the start.

Red Centre Garden

Experience Australia’s iconic outback without leaving Canberra.

The Red Centre Garden showcases native plants that thrive in harsh desert environments, including striking spinifex grasses, flowering shrubs, and rugged sandstone landscaping.

This section provides a fascinating look at Australia’s diverse and natural beauty, a shocking departure from the rest of the sections, the red centre stands out right away. The soil is dry and rich in color and you get a striking view of Telstra Tower as well.

The Eucalyptus Collection

Australia is home to hundreds of eucalyptus species, and the gardens feature some of the country’s finest collections.

The scent alone makes this area worth exploring, you can distinguish it right away from other forested scents. The trees stand so tall and make this beautiful canopy where many of the birds criss cross above the paths. Don’t forget to look up!

Birdwatching & Wildlife

The Australian National Botanical Gardens is a paradise for bird lovers. More than 100 species of birds have been recorded throughout the gardens, but there are so many you can enjoy without too much extra effort. You will likely hear them before you see them, there calls are unique and often quite loud.

Keep an eye out for:

  • Crimson Rosellas
  • Gang-gang Cockatoos
  • King Parrots
  • Kookaburras

Even casual visitors often spot several species during a leisurely walk. We also came upon a kangaroo relaxing along side a path. It was neither concerned or bothered by our presence and what a treat to see it so close up.

Don’t Miss the Pollen Café

No visit is complete without stopping at Pollen Café, the sweetest cafe located within the gardens. Surrounded by native bushland, it’s one of Canberra’s loveliest café settings and an ideal place to relax before, during or after exploring.

Local Specialties

The menu focuses on fresh Australian ingredients with a modern café style.

Popular choices include:

  • Gourmet breakfast plates
  • Smashed avocado on sourdough
  • Seasonal salads
  • House-made pastries
  • Fresh sandwiches
  • Excellent coffee

Don’t leave without trying one of their house-made cakes or slices, which pair perfectly with a flat white while overlooking the gardens. Outdoor seating allows you to continue enjoying the peaceful surroundings and birdsong soundtrack during your meal.

Treat Yourself at Jindii EcoSpa

After exploring the gardens, continue your day of relaxation with a visit to Jindii EcoSpa, conveniently located near to the cafe. Inspired by Australia’s native botanicals, the spa specializes in treatments that celebrate local ingredients and natural wellness.

A few days after our initial walk- thru of the gardens, a few of us headed back for a little self care. We chose a package that included:

  • Signature relaxation massages
  • Native botanical facials
  • Body scrubs

What I thought was uniquely special about this spa is that many treatments incorporate Australian essential oils and plant-based products, making the experience uniquely Australian.

For the ultimate self-care day, spend the morning wandering the gardens, enjoy lunch at Pollen Café, and finish with an afternoon massage or facial. It’s a wonderful way to unwind after a busy week or celebrate a special occasion.

Making the Most of Your Visit

A few tips to enhance your experience:

  • Visit early in the morning for cooler temperatures and active birdlife.
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes, as there are several kilometres of pathways.
  • Bring a reusable water bottle or better yet a reusable travel mug for the cafe.
  • Pack your camera—the gardens offer beautiful photo opportunities year-round.
  • Check the seasonal events calendar before visiting, as guided walks, exhibitions, and native plant sales are held throughout the year.

Why We Loved the Australian National Botanical Gardens

The Australian National Botanical Gardens offers far more than beautiful gardens. It’s a place to slow down, reconnect with nature, and discover the remarkable diversity of Australia’s native landscapes. Whether you’re admiring colorful wildflowers, listening to native birds in the rainforest gully, enjoying brunch with friends at Pollen Café, or treating yourself to a relaxing spa experience nearby, it’s easy to spend an entire day immersed in one of Canberra’s most peaceful attractions.

If you’re visiting Canberra—or you’re lucky enough to call the city home—the Australian National Botanical Gardens deserves a place at the top of your must-visit list.
