1. Minhwa Painting (Traditional Folk Art)
One of the most meaningful creative experiences in Seoul is learning minhwa, Korea’s traditional folk painting style known for its vibrant colors and symbolic motifs.
Small, intimate studios—especially in neighborhoods like Insadong —offer beginner-friendly classes where you can paint tigers, peonies, or symbolic animals representing luck and prosperity. These sessions are often led by local artists and feel more personal than large group classes.
We had the chance to book a session with Airbnb Experiences that turned out to be the most fun afternoon. Our instructor was delightful, knowledgeable and made the painting so much fun. We took home such a beautiful reminder of our time in Seoul.
A great alternative would be this class on Korean Fan Painting – Check Availability Here!
Best neighborhood: Insadong, has many traditional studios.
Why here: Historic art district filled with galleries and craft studios

2. Mother-of-Pearl (Najeonchilgi Craft)
Another opportunity to be creative is crafting using Najeonchilgi, which is a traditional Korean, mother-of-pearl lacquerware craft technique where iridescent shellfish, such as abalone or turban shells, are inlaid into wood coated with natural, dark lacquer. I was able to attend a class where we designed our own jewelry box using traditional techniques. It is one of the most unique creative experiences in Seoul. Even with no experience, the workshop was easy enough that I was able to create something beautiful and useful.
The Najeonchilgi workshops let you create intricate designs using shimmering shell inlays. You can craft items like jewelry boxes, mirrors, or accessories using centuries-old techniques. We got to learn and understand the importance of different animals and symbols and create something that not only felt beautiful but personal.

3. Custom Korean Name Stamp (Dojang Engraving)
Another popular creative activity is engraving a personalized Korean stamp (dojang). It is a simple but meaningful activity, feeling personalized and unique. These stamps are traditionally used as signatures and carry cultural significance. I haven’t had the chance to make mine yet, but it is on the list. Bonus points: it takes up very little space in your luggage so you can bring a few home as gifts!
In areas like Insadong, you’ll find workshops where artisans help you design and carve your own stamp using your name (or a Korean translation of it). It’s a perfect blend of calligraphy, design, and craftsmanship.

Another unique addition to your list of creative experiences in Seoul is taking a hands-on soju-making class. In neighborhoods like Hongdae and Itaewon, modern distillery workshops and cultural studios offer guided sessions where you can learn about Korea’s iconic spirit, soju.
These classes typically walk you through the basics of fermentation, ingredients like rice and nuruk (traditional starter), and the distillation process—often simplified for a short, beginner-friendly experience. The highlight is creating or blending your own customized soju, sometimes even bottling it with a personalized label.
It’s a fun mix of education and creativity, and a great option if you want a social, interactive activity that goes beyond traditional crafts.

For a more tactile experience, pottery classes are among the most popular creative experiences in Seoul. Korean ceramics have a long history and you can learn all about them by visiting the Icheon Ceramics Village. If you want to stay closer to central Seoul, then I recommend studios in Seongsu-dong and Hongdae that offer wheel-throwing or hand-building sessions.
You’ll learn to shape clay into bowls, cups, or plates—often guided by contemporary artists blending modern aesthetics with traditional Korean techniques.
