An Enchanted Day Trip to Nami Island

The kids were in school for Labor Day so we snuck off for a little adventure date of our own. We decided to drive the hour and a half outside Seoul for a quick day trip to Nami Island. Located just outside of Seoul, Nami Island is a charming, tree-lined getaway known for its natural beauty and romantic atmosphere. The island features scenic walking paths, seasonal landscapes, and peaceful riverside views that change dramatically throughout the year—from cherry blossoms in spring to fiery autumn leaves and snowy winter scenes.

Getting There

After a 1.5 hour drive outside of Seoul, we purchased our tickets right outside the ferry and after a quick 10 minute ride, we arrived on Nami Island and the storybook-ness begins. For the thrill seekers in the group, you can bypass the ferry altogether and zipline onto the island, if you are looking for a more adventurous grand entrance.

What To Do on Nami Island

Not sure what to expect, we took a quick wonder through the main drag and did some exploring through the beautiful gardens and wondered through some quaint shops. Long tree lined paths lead you around into different areas with storybook art and themes. We decided a tandem bike was on the agenda and we spent 30 minutes biking around the island, which was a great way to see the river views and all the options for activities when we bring the kids back. Other activities on Nami Island include:

  • Try traditional Korean snacks from food stalls around the island
  • Walk along the riverside trails for quieter, less crowded views
  • Visit the children’s playgrounds and family-friendly zones
  • Attend seasonal festivals or pop-up events, depending on the time of year
  • Explore the island’s gardens and eco-areas, perfect for nature lovers
  • Browse small gift shops for locally made souvenirs and artwork
  • Enjoy live street performances or music, which often appear on weekends
  • Relax on benches and picnic areas while soaking in the peaceful scenery

There were several restaurant options on the island and we settled on Korean BBQ, is was delicious. I, of course needed to follow it up with a steamed bun with red bean paste, which was amazing…. so good in fact that I forgot to take a picture of the inside for you. (And only 1,000 won = .79 cents).

The island has a very peaceful energy, making it a great escape from the hustle and bustle of the City. I can definitely see our family making another trip here and exploring even more of the activities. It wasn’t overly crowded, I think making the trip early on a Monday made for a quieter experience.

Final Thoughts

A day trip to Nami Island was just what we needed, I would love to come back in late Fall when the leaves are turning colors. There are a few hotels on the island to come enjoy a few nights away, and I imagine the island has special charms in each season. With bike rentals, art installations, cafés, and family-friendly attractions, Nami Island is a relaxing and picturesque day trip that appeals to couples, families, and photographers alike. Definitely worth the day trip from Seoul.
