Merry Christmas from Seoul

This is our first year celebrating Christmas away from home. While we have lived abroad before, we have always traveled home during the holidays and this year, it just wasn’t in the cards for us. So I was very eager to see how this city would celebrate Christmas and very willing to overcompensate for my missing home with extra celebratory experiences.

Large light displays, the most insanely cute baked goods, American Christmas music, and lots of decorations were everywhere to be found across the city. We have tried to make it out to the major must see places, some were the best we’ve ever seen and a few were so overtaken by crowds that I am sure we won’t put them on the list for next year.

Here is what we have done so far that were really over the top fabulous: The first being the Garden of the Morning Calm, which might be the best light display I have ever seen. Despite the 1 hour drive outside of the City and the freezing temps, this was the highlight of season and we will go back every year. 10/10 it was stunning.

We also made our way uptown for the European Christmas Market put on by many of the European Embassy’s but the crowds really overtook the event and it was difficult to enjoy. The idea was great, but probably won’t go back next year. Walking around the shopping district at night gives you the best “Christmas in the City” feel with lights and decorations everywhere.

The large malls put on the best displays by far, the Christmas village vibes are pure magic. The crowds are large and it can be difficult to get the experience you are looking for, but patience and a slow weekday are your best bet. Next up is the sugar coma you will have after eating your way through the month of December.

I will say that Korea owns the market on the cutest food on earth, and you will want to try it all. Last but not least, we took some spins in the 24 hour selfie stations with all the silly holiday props for some fun memories.

There is nothing quite like being home for Christmas, but we made a good effort to feel all the feels of the season. We hope you all had wonderful holidays as well.
