We had some very personal reasons to make our way over to Gulf Shores, Alabama 2 weeks ago and they were 7 years in the making. Across the Caribbean pond from Cartagena, I was eager to check out this part of our country. I have never been to the South and couldn’t wait to get a taste of that southern charm.

Arriving in Gulf Shores
About a 4 hour flight into Miami with a quick layover and we arrived in Pensacola. A quick drive into Flora-bama and we arrived at our destination. Gulf Shores, Alabama is a laid-back coastal destination known for its sugar-white sand beaches, warm Gulf waters, and relaxed Southern charm. Located along the Alabama Gulf Coast, it’s a popular spot for families and beach lovers thanks to its calm shoreline, abundant vacation rentals, and easygoing vibe. Beyond the beach, visitors can enjoy fresh seafood, scenic nature trails at Gulf State Park, water sports, and stunning sunsets that make Gulf Shores feel like a hidden gem compared to more crowded beach destinations.

If you haven’t guessed it yet, we were here to watch our favorite team and our favorite coach/Nana go for the big win! Lucky for us, it was the perfect reason to take a mother/son trip. First things first, we had to get cheering for our Pepperdine Waves! I have always enjoyed being a super-fan and it was the perfect weekend to let the Pepperdine flag fly! I love getting to have this one on one time with Logan, showing him things I love and also getting to share new experiences with him. We cheered and cheered and cheered some more.

Exploring the Gulf Shores Attractions
While the beaches are the main attractions, we had a few afternoons free and wanted to see what else was in store around Gulf Shores. So in our off hours, we explored a few other attractions. If you have time, purchase the Gulf Shores Multi-Attraction Pass which includes all the following:
- Entrance ticket to Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo
- Entrance ticket to The Wharf Ferris Wheel
- Entrance ticket to Foley’s Depot Museum and Model Train Exhibit
- Entrance ticket to Historic Blakeley State Park
- Entrance ticket to USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park
For our first stop, we decided to see the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo: We got up close and personal with Lemurs, of course had to check out the gators and say hello to the Capybara! Despite the heat, this zoo was just the right size to spend a few hours in the afternoon. Very sweet and not too crowded.

We also checked out Fort Morgan, located at the western tip of the Gulf Shores area. It is a historic coastal fort that offers a fascinating mix of history, scenery, and outdoor exploration. Built in the early 19th century, the fort played a key role in the Civil War and once guarded the entrance to Mobile Bay. Today, visitors can walk through its brick walls, tunnels, and battlements while enjoying sweeping views of the Gulf of Mexico. With nearby quiet beaches, Fort Morgan is a peaceful and enriching stop for those looking to explore beyond the main beach areas of Gulf Shores.

This was a personal trip with lots of bonus points, we were able to enjoy family, friends and fried food! I may never recover from the absolute treat that is fried pickles. There is no doubt that our trip the Hang Out was one of my favorite food joints in all of Gulf Shores.

I loved the white sand beaches full of sea shells and that we could share this time with people we love. We learned some lessons about winning and losing, but also just being there for it all, no matter the outcome. We had a blast in Gulf Shores, Alabama and I hope it’s not the last time we get to these parts!

Another short and tropical destination just a few hours from Cartagena is Aruba! Please check out my post of our wonderful week on Aruba, One Happy Island!
