When You Know It’s Time

When I knew we were going to apply for an overseas position, I immediately had this knot in my stomach.  I was nervous to go and I was nervous to stay and miss the opportunity.   Maybe next year, maybe when the youngest is out of diapers, maybe (fill in the blank).  There is no perfect time, only slightly more organized departure dates.

For the sake of honestly, I knew the little voice in the back of my head was feeling anxious. Telling me to get off the hamster wheel and try something new.  We took the opportunity because it became available, not because we were  “ready”.  So I still have one in diapers, I don’t know Spanish, I have never visited the country or the continent for that matter, but in the end, it is those very things that will make this journey an interesting one.

  1. I look forward to following your adventures!

I remember my first expat experience. I went to Seoul, Korea as a single person, working as a teacher at an international school. I intended to stay for two years, but I met my husband there, had two kids, and ended up staying for ten. We are in Beijing, China now.

I had traveled extensively before moving overseas, but traveling is so different from moving there. The initial transition can be tough. You’ll have good days and bad days, but if you’re anything like me, you’ll love the expat life and be so thankful for all the unique experiences.

Blessings to you as you begin your journey. I’m so excited for you.
