What Is Pack for a Purpose?
Pack for a Purpose is a nonprofit program that connects travelers with community projects in the destinations they’re visiting. It invites travelers to bring along items that local schools, clinics, and community organizations genuinely need — such as school supplies, medical goods, or even sports equipment. Travelers then drop those items off at participating lodges, hotels, or organizations when they arrive, and local partners ensure the supplies reach the people who need them most.
The idea is refreshingly simple: pack a little extra, give a lot of meaning, and help make tourism a force for good.

This past weekend, Cartagena Paws was contacted by a group of travelers coming in on the Disney Wonder Cruise ship into Cartagena. So we grabbed a couple of great 4 legged ambassadors and headed to meet them at the cruise terminal. They were delighted to meet some of the sweet pups that would be receiving their generous donations, and the volunteers from Cartagena Paws were so happy to be able to showcase the great and important work they are doing in the community for animals. It’s a win-win.
A Short History: From a Simple Idea to a Global Movement
Pack for a Purpose was founded in 2009 by Ami Vitale and Betsy Bingham, two travelers who saw a way to harness the power of tourism for social good. They recognized that millions of travelers pass through airports each year, often with extra luggage space — yet many communities in the destinations they visited struggled to access basic supplies.
Their solution was elegant and practical: instead of buying an extra souvenir, travelers could carry small, much-needed items for local projects. What started with a handful of participating lodges and a simple website listing supply requests quickly took off.
Within a few short years, Pack for a Purpose grew beyond its early beginnings. It expanded to include communities in Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, Central and South America, and the Pacific Islands. Today, hundreds of accommodations around the world participate in the program, and tens of thousands of travelers have contributed thousands of pounds of supplies — directly benefiting schools, clinics, and community centers.
How Pack for a Purpose Works
The process is easy and traveler-friendly, designed so anyone planning a trip can make an impact without adding stress to their journey.
- Visit the Pack for a Purpose website and enter the destination you’re traveling to.
- Choose a participating community project along your route.
- Review the project’s list of requested supplies, such as notebooks, writing utensils, first-aid kits, or teaching aids.
- Pack one or two of these items in your luggage — often in an empty duffel bag or small carry-on.
- Drop off the supplies at the designated hotel or accommodation when you arrive.
- Local staff facilitate distribution directly to the school, clinic, or community center.
Because travelers use unused luggage space, the environmental impact is minimal compared to shipping, and the human impact is direct and meaningful.

Why Pack for a Purpose Has Been So Successful
1. It Makes Helping Accessible to Every Traveler
One of the biggest strengths of Pack for a Purpose is how inclusive it is. You don’t need to be wealthy or wealthy, or spend extra — you just use the space you already have. A couple of extra pens, a few notebooks, or some bandages won’t break your budget, but they can mean the world to a small school or clinic.
2. It Creates Connection Between Visitors and Communities
Travel can sometimes feel transactional: we see places, take photos, and move on. Pack for a Purpose changes that dynamic. When you deliver supplies in person and see the gratitude and faces connected to your gift, it makes travel more personal and impactful. It deepens the connection between visitor and community in a way few other programs do. Meaningful travel is becoming more popular by movements such as Slow Travel. The main premise of your experience abroad is that whether vacationing or traveling, it can be made into a fulfilling and positive impact.
3. It Supports Locally Identified Needs
Unlike some well-meaning charitable efforts that impose solutions without local input, Pack for a Purpose relies on requests generated by the communities themselves. Each project lists items that are actually needed, ensuring donations aren’t wasted. This supply-driven model respects local agency and makes contributions genuinely useful.
4. It Encourages Sustainable, Responsible Tourism
More travelers today are seeking ways to travel responsibly — to leave destinations better than they found them. Pack for a Purpose embeds this ethos into travel plans without adding complexity. It aligns with values like ethical travel, community empowerment, and sustainable tourism, which are increasingly important to modern travelers.
5. It Has a Global Network and Positive Reputation
Part of what makes Pack for a Purpose effective is its wide network of partners and its reputation as a trusted program. Hotels and lodges that participate often promote the initiative, making it easier for travelers to find opportunities and engage. Community projects know what to expect and how to distribute items responsibly, which builds trust on both sides of the partnership.
Real Stories, Real Impact
The impact of Pack for a Purpose is best measured not in statistics alone but in stories:
- Teachers in rural Tanzania receiving notebooks and markers for their students.
- Clinics in Belize receiving medical supplies that support basic health needs, often difficult to acquire and expensive to purchase locally.
- Children in remote Pacific islands gaining access to sports equipment and art supplies for the first time.
Travelers often report that bringing supplies became their favorite part of the trip, forging memories deeper than any photo taken at a landmark.
Tips for Travelers Who Want to Pack With a Purpose
- Check ahead: Visit the Pack for a Purpose website before you book flights or accommodation, and plan how packing a few items can fit into your itinerary.
- Choose light, high-impact items: Think school supplies, hygiene kits, basic medical supplies, or creative tools like art materials — items that are useful and easy to transport.
- Connect with your accommodation: Many hotels are happy to help and will even provide details about where to drop supplies off.
- Share your experience: Travelers often inspire others when they post about their contribution on social media or blogs, amplifying the program’s reach.
Pack for a Purpose: A Simple Step That Makes a Big Difference
Traveling should be more than just seeing the world — it should be about leaving a positive footprint. Pack for a Purpose does exactly that by empowering travelers to directly support local communities in meaningful ways. The genius of the program lies in its simplicity: use a tiny slice of your luggage to deliver something that truly matters.
Final Thoughts
Whether you’re setting off for a distant safari, a beach escape, or a city break, Pack for a Purpose offers a way to travel with heart. It’s proof that when we travel intentionally, even small actions ripple into real, positive change around the world.
I am continually inspired by the generosity of people, especially those who aren’t otherwise expected to be (vacationing tourists). What a great opportunity to meet a need while traveling. It was so lovely to meet the people who organized this group of travelers. They brought difficult to get medications, expensive grooming supplies and harness gear , all of which are more expensive if you purchase them locally. Those people may never see this, but I hope they inspire many of you to check out this program and give a try. I know I will be for our next destination.
